Black Girlin the ring

In colonial Jamaica, a teenage Nanny of the Maroons plots a daring escape from slavery with her brothers — a true-hearted story of ancestral strength, resistance, and the power of a Black woman who refuses to be broken.

The Story

Long before she became a legend carved into Jamaica's history, Nanny of the Maroons was a girl — sharp, watchful, and unwilling to accept the fate laid out for her. Black Girl in the Ring follows that girl in the years before the myth, as she gathers her brothers and plans the escape that history would remember.

Shot across Jamaica's own countryside and great houses, the film sits inside real landscapes to imagine a formative, largely untold chapter of a national icon's life — a story of family, risk, and the quiet, ferocious will that resistance is built from.

The project was written and produced by Saeed Thomas, inspired in part by Runkus' song "Black Magic" and its meditation on the strength of Black women — and brought to the screen by the Jamaica-based production house M-One.
